Washington, D.C. (01/22/2026) — The Washington Spirit have secured one of the brightest stars in the global women’s game, announcing a new contract extension with forward Trinity Rodman that will keep her in the nation’s capital through the 2028 NWSL season.

Rodman, a cornerstone of the Spirit and one of the league’s most marketable and impactful players, signed a three-year deal that ranks among the most significant contracts in NWSL history. The agreement underscores a shared commitment between Rodman and the Spirit to sustained success, championship contention and continued growth on the world stage.

The 2021 NWSL champion and 2024 Olympic gold medalist has been central to Washington’s rise as a perennial title contender and remains one of the league’s defining talents.

“I’ve made the DMV my home and the Spirit my family, and I knew this was where I wanted to enter the next chapter of my career,” Rodman said. “We’re chasing championships and raising the standard, and I can’t wait to keep doing that with my teammates and the best fans in the NWSL.”

Since entering the league as the second overall pick in the 2021 NWSL Draft, Rodman has quickly established herself as one of the most dynamic players in women’s soccer. Drafted at just 18 years old, she became the youngest player ever selected in league history and has continued to shatter records since.

Rodman earned 2021 NWSL Rookie of the Year, delivered the championship-winning assist in the 2021 NWSL Championship and became the youngest player in league history to reach 50 career goal contributions. She is a two-time Ballon d’Or Féminin finalist, a 2024 NWSL MVP finalist and currently holds the Washington Spirit’s all-time assists record.

Spirit owner Michele Kang emphasized the significance of the extension for both the club and the league.

“Trinity is a generational player and represents the future of this club and women’s soccer,” Kang said. “This agreement reflects our belief that elite talent deserves elite commitment. Trinity choosing to continue her career in Washington is a powerful statement about what we are building here.”

Beyond club success, Rodman has become a fixture with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Since making her senior debut in 2022, she has earned 47 caps, scoring 11 goals with nine assists, and played a pivotal role in the 2024 Olympic Games, recording four goals and an assist — including the dramatic extra-time winner against Japan in the quarterfinals.

“Trinity is absolutely critical to this club, to the NWSL and to women’s soccer,” said Spirit President of Soccer Operations Haley Carter. “She’s a foundational piece as we compete for championships and build something sustainable our fans can be proud of.”

Spirit General Manager Nathan Minion echoed that sentiment, calling Rodman central to the club’s long-term vision.

“She is one of the best players in the world and a transformational presence for the Spirit,” Minion said. “We are thrilled to continue this journey together.”

The Spirit are coming off their second consecutive NWSL Championship appearance and will look to build on that momentum in 2026. Washington opened preseason this week and will begin the regular season on Friday, March 13, hosting Portland Thorns FC at Audi Field.

Information on 2026 Washington Spirit season tickets is available through the club.
